Dark Water.,.or My Evening..

I enjoyed the film Dark Water..a piece about a woman, (Jennifer Connelly), who finds herself in a haunted apartment with her daughter and a ghost who floods the upstairs apartment and drips dark, nasty water into their apartment constantly.

I never thought I'd end up living in it..

SIGH.

My upstairs neighbor did something..I don't know what, exactly..but water flooded my two bathrooms from above, made water stains in my hall ceiling and filled the light fixture with water until it looked like a fishbowl with two lightbulbs in it.

I have taken it as a sign..like a Biblical flood.

The condo search has begun in earnest.

In the meantime I'm using lots and lots of towels..

Morning After Pill Back on the Table

Bush's FDA appointment has reopened the case for the morning after pill just 24 hours before he is set to sit in front of Congress and explain his foot shuffling. This is a case where everyone: scientists, doctors and the company producing the drug all agree..it's just the Administration that feels it's not a good idea for women to have emergency contraceptives without a perscription.
Start praying now...I'm very excited that sanity may rule the day for once.

http://www.11alive.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=82684

More from ComputerLessville and Smallville

I am still computerless..and will be for several more weeks, if the repair company is to be believed. I am so desperate I have bought two new games as presents for my computer once it returns to me. : sob:
I bought Sims2 Open for Busisness, Sims2 Family Fun, and The Guild, a game where you run a family from the 16th through 18th centuries.

Last night I saw Superman Returns..eh..I was not impressed.

As an homage to the Donner films, it was nice, but it ignored anything that has happened to these characters in the last 20 odd years, namely that Clark Kent has been developed post-Byrne. Clark Kent is the man, Superman is the disguise. It was like watching Clark de-evolve- from a conflicted character who has to hide his powers and lie to those he loves while managing the tension between how he is and how the world percieves him to Clark Kent the bumbling goofball who only has a personality when he puts on the suit.

Don't even get me started on the Abomination of SuperKid, and how this throws a dozen monkey wrenches in the CK/LL dynamic..

Kevin Space as Lex was the best part even if his backstory was screwed to hell (He grew up poor? He has to cheat widows for money? He uses paper encyclopedias to look up info..no computers?)and his motivations were unclear..(I thought I caught what may be a reference to upcoming Season 6 Smallville in one of his lines..)..

Kate Bosworth was a lightweight next to all of the Lois' before her...hated her. And she's too young to have that kid..when'd she have him, during high school?

James Marsden's Richard White actually got to me...He was a good guy, raising someone else's kid (whether he knows is debateable), and he did a darn good job of trying to save the day..why does Lois need Supes, again?

And the suit was weird..the cape was up around his neck so that his shoulders seemed gigantic and his head seemed big, and the S has shrunk, leaving you with the impression his chest is a mile wide.

Google and Yahoo Help China Crack Down on Dissent

Disturbing news was brought to my attention..

Yahoo! not only censors their Chinese web browser, but also helps the Chinese government crack down on dissenters..

http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/02/09/china.yahoo.ap/

http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/NewsArticle.aspx?type=internetNews&storyID=2006-02-10T052316Z_01_N0917515_RTRIDST_0_OUKIN-UK-CHINA-INTERNET.XML

This makes me want to seriously consider switching all my email to gmail.

Google, after all, refused to give info on Net searches to the Bush/Cheney/Neo-Con Death Cults/Justice Department...
All the other major search engines bent over to kiss the B/C/N-C D C/J D's butts..

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5165530

Yes indeedy..if you've used anything other than Google to search on, the Justice Department can, and probably is looking at your results.

HOWEVER..

Google has decided to curtail it's Chinese search page as well..although it seems to have drawn the line at actually handing over info.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4645596.stm

So..what to do.. weigh in and be heard..(unless you search for this on something other than Google, or on a Chinese site..then you're already being heard loud and clear by Big Brother)..

Plan on leaving Yahoo..if you indeed have yahoo?

Life, the Universe..

It could be the meds talking, but I'm feeling like life is going to be better now.

In other news..

Chewie is becoming increasingly jealous of the computer, and attention-hungry in general. I need to spend more time with His Royal Cuteness.

Or my stuff will suffer..I already owe Lisa a book that Chewie devoured last night in his frustration. I wish it was warmer..we could walk, then.

Random facts:
The Peppercorn Soup at Atlanta Bread Company is mighty tasty..
It's only when your life becomes crazy busy that your online rpgs decide to fire up...
Fate dictates that if I grab a basket at the grocery store with the intent to buy only a few items, I will inevitably end up lugging an overfull basket around the store rather than going back up to get a cart..

New Year's

I spent a wonderful New Year's eve/Christmas celebration with C., K., J. and W. It felt like coming home. :huge hug:

Had my first real taste of DDR..my calves are regretting it today. I would love to play more often. (coughs in W.'s direction, giving her puppydog eyes) It's fun and highly addictive, even if I do look like a hyperactive bunny on steroids while doing it.

Proceeded to the symphony with J to see PDQ, met K. and D. and enjoyed an evening of musical mayhem (and I'm thinking of using more confusing letters just for the heck of it..)

I just finished my first draft of my "professional goals statement" for my grad school application..I feel like a whore. Godde I hate applications.

Movie news that both broke my heart and remade it today...

The Bad News:

Katie Holmes aka Mrs Tom Cruise has apparently been asked back for the next Batman film.

The Good News:
Kevin Smith is dropping hints that he may, after "Passion of the Clerks" (His upcoming Clerks sequel), be working on a sequel to "Dogma."

Public Service Announcement

The following is a public service announcement for all lovers of English literature in general and Jane Austen in particular...

Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT go to see the new "Pride and Prejudice."

It bears the same resemblance to "Pride and Prejudice" as "I, Robot" did to the works of Asimov.
It should have had the disclaimer "inspired by" attatched to it, as "I, Robot" did, at least admitting that they deviated so far from the source material as to be unrecognizable.

But, you say, didn't the film have the same basic plot as the Austen novel? Yes. Person A goes from point B to C, but that doesn't mean it in any way was related to Austen. In fact, it more resembled Bronte than anything else..

1)The cinematography- It was lovely. Lots of bucolic splendor, the Bennett household teemed with life, including farm-yard life in the form of geese, chickens, and pigs who wander indoors, there's mud everywhere, and the dounpour that soaks Darcy and Lizzie as they declare their feelings for each other is very well done. However, none of this belongs in a Jane Austen film! As Elizabeth ponders her life on a clifftop, I half expected her to cry out "HEATHCLIFF!," while Darcy wandering open-shirted across the foggy moor answered "CATHY!!!" (Note:Both those shots are in the film, btw..I just added the dialouge.)
'
2)The dialouge- They butchered all of the novel's best speeches. Period. Either they took out some of the best zingers or added their own mundane dross to the mix. Darcy would never, ever say "I love you. I love you. I love you. You have bewitched me body and soul." (At this point I expected him to say "You are my soul, Jane!" and be horribly scarred in the ensuing house fire..)

3)Mrs Bennett had a brain, which she apparently stole from Bingley, who was nothing less than an absolute idiot. They showed us most of his proposal to Jane, during which he apologizes for being an ass. Something which doesn't fit in the novel, but actually, does work in this film because he was an ass. Speaking of ass...there was even a shot of him reaching for the back of her dress at one point, nearly knocking us out of our seats in shock, as we are pretty sure noone ever copped a feel in P&P.

4)Sexual liberation in Austen's England?-Apparently not only could you spend large amounts of time unchaperoned with the opposite sex during this period, according to the film, but they were allowed to walk into your bedroom unnanounced, as Bingley does to Jane in one scene. Darcy also visits Lizzie in the middle of the night as she stands there in her nightgown. Neither seems overly shocked (perhaps because Lizzie, in an odd directorial decision, has been standing in front of this mirror for an entire day, literally, and may be catatonic, thus accounting for her lack of reaction). When Mr Collins proposes to Lizzie at the breakfast table, the entire clan exits stage right with very little murmur of impropriety, not even Mr Bennett, who you think would have had more sense. And when Bingley proposes to Jane, Lizzie doesn't complain in the slightest that leaving them alone together is out of the question. Lydia is looking less and less like a hussy..speaking of which, Mrs. Bennett provides the info that Lydia's downfall will drag down her sisters as well (in the novel and the BBC adaptation she seems unaware of this implication), but in the nest second she is overjoyed to hear of the wedding, something which makes her seem like some sort of 19th century manic depressive.

So..if you want a tame version of the Bronte sisters, go see this film. If you love, or like, or even have heard of Jane Austen, stay far, far away from this movie..the title of which should have been.. "Constipated and Vaugely Bothered." instead of "Pride and Prejudice."

Goblet of Fire

Spoilers if you a)Haven't seen it, b)Haven't read it, c)Have been living under a rock since the book came out in 2000.

What I loved:

The Trio-Just keep getting better and better.. Ron had more to do.. the R/H romance is just getting revved up, and Dan Radcliffe hit it out of the park.

Voldemort- Oh. My. God. Ralph Fiennes. SQUEEEEEE! So evil, so powerful, so creepy, just..can't wait for OOTP (Dumbledore vs Voldemort) and HPB (Flashback voldy with a nose and hair..whoohoo!). Is it wrong that I find the ultimate evil sexy?

Mad Eye Moody-Perfect. Just perfect. I missed "Constant Vigilance" but he almost made up for it by the end. At least we got the mirror.

Barty Crouch Jr- The new Doctor Who was appropriately crazy-evil, and the leather jacket looked good on him. Too bad he had his soul sucked out by Dementors. :(

Neville-Just adorable. Loved the expanded role. Watching him teach himself to dance was worth the price of admission.

Weasleys-The twins were finally given the chance to act like the twins! Ginny had more screen time! Mr Weasley was at least in it!

The Triwizard tournament-Appropriately exciting. Never my favorite part of the series, but done well, nonetheless.

Snape-Alan Rickman IS Severus Snape. Period.

The Graveyard scene- Lucius Malfoy, we're going to miss you, you Magnificent Bastard.

Things I didn't like:
2.5 hour running time- Still barely enough to cover the needed ground..oof. Good luck to the next screen writer!

Snape as Death Eater-As Karen pointed out, Harry, and the audience, completely miss this point.

No OOTP/Weasley/Sirius, etc Gathering around Harry's bed moment for a call to arms. This makes me sad.

No Mrs Weasley, Percy, Bill or Charley- :Sob: Where is my ponytailed, leather pants and dragon tooth earring wearing Weasley, damnit!??
Things that confused me:
Apparation- Goodies go poof in a cloud of white smoke, baddies in black smoke. hmmm..

The Duel-They completely failed to explain why the wands reacted the way they did, both in the connection and the ghost conjuring. Speaking of which, they neatly bypassed the "Who comes out first Lily or James" issue by having them emerge simultaneously. Very smartly done.. heh.
